Remote Debugging
From:  Jürg Lehni

This post serves as a starting point for all discussions related to remote debugging, especially on OS X.

As Scritpgorapher runs nicelly both in CS and CS2 on my development machine, it is very hard to nail down the problem with mysterious crashes on a row of machines out there.

It would help a great deal if someone encountering this problem could devote his machine for a day or so during which I could remotely debug Scriptographer.

To do so the machine should have a VNC server installed and running, for example OSXvnc .

Through a remote session, I then would install XCode, Eclipse, the Adobe SDK, and of course Scriptographer. As the download for XCode alone is around 900 MB, a fast internet connection is required.

Anyone interested in taking part in this adventure please post a reply here.

Lehni-

what are the minimum techinical reqs. for the machine? I know scriptographer can chew up a good piece of CPU time, but I have a g3 running osxvnc that I could put up for the cause

Lehni, I've been very impressed by your Scriptographer program since I read about it last month in Eye. Unfortunately, whenever I try to use a raster, Illustrator will hang. The scripts work fine. I run Illustrator CS under Tiger on a PowerBook G4. I'd gladly donate my resources to help get this problem solved.

I would be happy to offer my computer for debugging. Presently the script seems to crash AI on launch. Drop me an email.

Hi John,

That's great news! Do you already have XCode installed on your system? I would need it for debugging, and a few hours for seting everything up and debugging properly. Could you send me an email to sg@scriptographer.com so we can plan the whole operation?

Just recently, SG seems to crash AI on startup. 12.0.0 on a 10.4.8 PPC powerbook. I have xcode installed, and can have it available at any time needed.

Hi Alex. Do you have the possibility to put your computer online in a way that allows me to access it from outside, e.g. not behind a router, or behind a router that routes the incoming connection accordingly?
You would also need to install OSXvnc or Remote Desktop. Is that possible?
Thank you for your offer.

Lehni, I have both installed, and can give all the access needed through the NAT wall. Just let me know what user you need to run as, and I'll set it up.

Dang, I just realized that the email associated with my account here has been down for a while. My offer to use my system as a test bed still stands, should you want it. Contact me at pabx_work - at - fastmail.fm to work out the login times/information.

There seems to be apossible fix for this problem now. If you encountered crashes at start-up, please check if it works for you or not.

Thanks!
